New Start
It almost feels appropriate to start my first day of National Novel Writing Month with a hangover. The main character in my novel is an alcoholic who is five years sober. The pain and regret from drinking reminds me how the protagonist used to feel when his life was out of control. While he has been living clean, there are always other problems that lead to conflict and pose challenges when keeping demons in check.
I don't know exactly where this novel will head, but I've decided to let it play out each day as I write. A story like this doesn't need some gimmick to work. It's not a form of popular fiction that steals from other ideas that have seen success. It's about life and all of its imperfections and the people who can make it better or worse.
